Legal Aspects of Marriage
June 2nd, 2010Before planning your wedding with the love of your life let’s take a look at some of the legal concerns you may want to think about.
Marriage Certificate
Prepare what you can ahead of time. The local government may ask a lot of different documents and these may take time if you are not prepared. Avoid the hassle by doing some research before filing the certificate of marriage. After the wedding check your legal documents if they have been registered.
Pre-nuptial Agreement
You don’t need to be a millionaire to consider having a pre-nuptial agreement. Pre-nups are usually drawn up if you have children with previous marriages. This is to ensure that you also protect the assets of your other children if your marriage ends prematurely. This may also apply if you both have a family business that is under your name. You don’t want to enter a gruesome legal battle in case your marriage doesn’t hold.
Name Change
You have to decide what surname to use. Not every bride takes on the groom’s name; it’s perfectly legal for him to take hers. Women are under no legal obligation to make this change. If you decide to do so, you need to know how to change your name. Do it incorrectly and it may cost you financially get in trouble with the IRS or even damage you Credit Rating.
