Did you know that the average bride gains over 15 pounds in the first year of marriage? It’s kind of shocking since over 70% of couples live together before marriage yet still changes happen once the “I Dos” take place. I understand weight gain if you start sharing a house after the wedding because it’s all new. Cooking for two, living with a man, and taking on each other’s habits can lead easily to weight gain.
So then why is it that women gain this weight? I think on part has to do with the fact that during your engagement you were on a strict wedding workout and diet plan so as you walked down the aisle you were probably smaller than normal, and when the diet was over the weight piled back on.
I think it also has to do with comfort. Research shows that once a woman is married she becomes more relaxed about herself, no longer trying so hard to keep your man… which means becoming less active and eating more of what you want.
So what should you do to make sure this doesn’t happen to you? First off, recognize the issue and that it can happen. If you notice that you are skipping your workout plans more often then get back on track, same goes for letting go with your food choices.
Also, schedule fun activities with your hubby. Go for bike rides, take advantage of hiking trails in the area. I am dragging my husband to go paddleboarding because it’s something I want to do and it is a fun fitness activity.
Keep yourself in check. My wedding dress just hangs there so yo better believe that every once in a while I put it on to feel that special feeling again and to make sure it still fits. I would love to be able to still zip it up after 20 years of marriage!
And last, create a healthy lifestyle for everyone. Make sure your husband understands that being fit is more than just workouts, it’s also the foods you eat. Forget about fat and salt packed dinners, forgo eating out for most nights and bring in a healthy menu. You’ll feel great about yourself and look fab from here on out.
